St. Bernard Abbey
The monks of St. Bernard Abbey are heirs to the 1,500 year Benedictine tradition of prayer, work, and community. Is God calling you or someone you know to join us?

Pat Ashe And so it St Joseph's in Florence, founded and nurtured by Benedictine monks of St Bernard. When I converted in 1976, the Monday night perpetual Novena to Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal was going strong at St Joseph;s, with beautiful music from the Cantica Benedicta. Here in England, my husband and I live 3 minutes' drive from the Shrine of Our Lady of Glastonbury, the restored shrine of the medieval Glastonbury Abbey, the ruins of which are just across Magdalene Street from the church. The prayers we recite in our praesidium of the Legion of Mary are almost identical to those in the novena, and bind my heart to St Joseph's and my family at St Bernard Abbey. There are no geographical borders in Our Lady's care.
Carla Bourque Oliver A group of six visited here last Thursday from Louisiana. We did not know this.
Trudy Carpri At OLS in Homewood too!!!

Kevin Daugherty Brother Gus was a key person in my personal development while a student, then a graduate, and afterward through the years. Although I live in Nashville, I've considered St. Bernard and Cullman my second home since my college freshman year in 1973. Brother Gus never saw me during a visit without asking me in detail about my family, and my cousin David Daugherty, who started at the same time as a freshman in 1973. I truly loved Brother Gus, and I am a better person for his presence in my life. I last saw Brother Gus in 2016 during the annual St. Bernard Bloomin' Festival. As always, we had a wonderful visit, and it is fitting that the visit took place in the Grotto gift shop. Rest in eternal Peace, Brother Gus !!
Loretta Sharon Prince I wish I could have been there this afternoon, Work schedule and higher gas prices took that away. When I got married in the abbey church we later took pictures in the grotto in my wedding gown, he willingly agreed for us to do that. I made it a priority to supply Gus over the years with home hand cookies. Now I'll keep the tradition alive with the rest of the abbey.
Jim Harris I was blessed to know Brother Gus since our time together in the dorm in 1979 as we tried to ride herd on the boys. I never missed a chance to visit when back on the campus. He was a friend whom I shall truly miss. His service this afternoon was a fitting celebration.
Walter Gresham Cantley Goodbye my friend, may God receive you gently into His arms. Thank you for letting me count you as one of my friends for the last fifty years. I was blessed to know you through college and for the better part of my life and know of the kind and gentle nature you had. Rest in Peace my friend.

Brian Reddy I will always remember him at the front of the grotto. Such a dear, truly, kind man. So generous of thought and action. Brother Gus embodied the Benedictine spirit, and the Benedictine example of true humility He was a dear man and an example of that humility at it's best,... to all of us. Brian Reddy, St. Bernard College. '71
Danielle O'Donnell Eternal rest grant unto him O Lord, And let the perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Prayers for you all. He surely will be missed.
Tim Creekmore I first met Gus when I was in seminary at St Bernard in 1966. I left there in 1969 and since then Gus has been a faithful correspondent. Last time I saw him was in May 2001 on my way to move to Florida. Always felt close to him. He will always be in my prayers and in my heart. A good friend and a wonderful model of a monk. God will bless him.
Tom Gagliano I first met Br. Augustine when I entered St. Bernard Seminary in September 1960. We became very close friends over the years and have stayed in touch throughout all these years. During the past fifteen years we would attend the Holy Saturday Vigil and we would visit Bro. Gus after the Liturgy and would talk and recall many happy shared experiences. Let us never forget this humble servant of God. Your days of suffering have ended. You have now entered the presence of God for all eternity. We now will pray to you. God bless you until we meet again.
DeKarlos Blackmon This is absolutely heartbreaking! Our venerable brother always took the time to write to me and encourage me regardless of the leadership roles I've taken on nationally and internationally. May he rest in sweet mercy of God after a full life of service to Christ, church, and community!
