The Timeless Power of Benedictine Respect

Respect for persons lies at the heart of the Benedictine way. We see each person, without exception, as a unique and precious child of God, bearing the divine image. Rather than judging, discriminating, or looking down on anyone, we honor, listen, speak kindly, and act with compassion towards all we encounter.

This "Christ at the Well" icon captures a powerful encounter between Jesus and a Samaritan woman. This timeless scene portrays Jesus breaking social barriers and recognizing the woman's dignity.

Jesus lived this kind of respect perfectly. Consider his interactions with those excluded by society – the Samaritan woman, the tax collector, the leper.  It's also mirrored in Mary's steady grace amidst the whirlwind of her Son's ministry. And ultimately, even God's limitless love extends respect to each person, especially those who struggle, suffer, or seek the way to a life of truth and goodness.

The Rule of St. Benedict offers practical guidance: “No one is to pursue what is judged best for oneself, but instead, what is better for someone else" (RB 72:7).  It compels us to show "proper honor...to all" (RB 63:8) and live by the Golden Rule:  "never do to another what you do not want done to yourself." (RB 4:24)

God's limitless love extends respect to each person, especially those who struggle, suffer, or seek the way to a life of truth and goodness.

Respect for persons isn't a mere duty, but a source of peace, harmony, and profound blessing. In a world so quick to divide and disregard, Benedictine respect reflects spiritual maturity and deep wisdom. As we practice it, we receive grace, not only for ourselves, but for every life we touch.

Let us pray that God shapes us into communities where respect for every person flourishes, a constant affirmation of our shared kinship in Christ. May our example of unwavering respect illuminate the inherent dignity of all we encounter - like a city on a hill - and thus draw others towards a world brimming with compassion. Amen.
